The material of the Ratio coffee maker

A commitment to quality and safety

Exceptional design starts with exceptional materials. All Ratio machines are carefully constructed with high-quality components that guarantee durability, safety and a luxurious brewing experience. This is what enables us to offer a generous 5-year warranty.

Water tank: BPA-free copolymer plastic

All Ratio machines have a cold water tank made of Eastman Tritan TX2001, a BPA-free copolymer plastic. Tritan has undergone extensive third-party laboratory testing to confirm its chemical safety, to ensure it does not contain Bisphenol A (BPA), Bisphenol S or other bisphenol compounds. We only use 100% virgin plastic so there is no concern about other materials being used. The shatter-resistant nature of tritan also adds durability to the container, providing peace of mind with every brew. There is no hot water contact with any of our machines’ water tanks.

Waterlines: borosilicate glass

Ratio Eight and Six use hand-blown borosilicate glass for the hot water pipes. Borosilicate glass is known for its durability and resistance to thermal shock, ensuring that water quality remains uncompromised as it moves through the brewing system. This material choice prevents any contamination from plastic leakage, keeping your coffee clean and unaltered. The Ratio Four uses FDA-rated silicone water lines due to its compact size.

Shower head: stainless steel

The wide shower head on all Ratio machines is constructed from stainless steel. The shower head is responsible for distributing the water evenly over the coffee grounds and is the last exit point for the hot water before it hits the coffee grounds. This ensures both long life and consistent performance, providing optimal extraction for a balanced and flavorful cup of coffee.

Heating element: efficient metal construction

All Ratio machines use a pure aluminum heating element that provides efficient and rapid heat transfer to achieve ideal brewing temperatures. This choice ensures consistent heating performance and delivers hot water at the optimal temperature for coffee extraction. There are no coatings that can flake off after much use.

Water line connections: FDA grade silicone

To maintain the highest standards of food safety, all Ratio machines use FDA-grade silicone for water line connections. This material is carefully selected to prevent unwanted interaction between the water and other components, preserving both the flavor and quality of your brew. These are also designed to withstand the rigors of shipping and normal use.

Ratio Six Base: Stainless steel format

Ratio Six is shaped by a precision stamped stainless steel “body” that ensures durability along with the perfect finish on both white and matte black color options.

Our view on plastics: Safety above all else

At Ratio, we understand that some customers prefer to minimize plastics in their homes, while others appreciate the heat-preserving benefits of high-quality polymers. When incorporating plastics into our designs, we use only BPA-free polymers from reputable manufacturers such as Eastman and 3M. The small BPA-free polysulfone component of Ratio Eight and Six, placed where cold water enters the heating element, was specifically chosen for its ability to maintain a watertight seal.

All plastics used in Ratio products are 100% virgin, ensuring they meet the highest safety standards. In addition, our black plastics are free from harmful flame retardant chemicals such as BDE-209, further reinforcing our commitment to material safety.
